Jessica CanoThe Story of Jessica’s Closet

As Told by Jessica’s Family

One afternoon a young girl knocked on our door and told us that our daughter, Jessica had given her permission to pick three outfits out of her closet. We were hesitant at first to let her in and called Jessica to find out the details. Jessica explained to us, that this young girl was homeless and needed clothes and that she had sent her to pick anything she wanted out of her closet. This was not the first nor was it the last person to show up on our door step homeless or in need. Jessica never thought twice about sharing what she had with others less fortunate than her.

Jessica Dianne Cano lost her life on February 18, 2009, in a tragic car accident. As news of her death spread, our family was repeatedly contacted by people whose lives had been touched and changed by Jessica. We were overwhelmed by the emotional and touching stories that were shared with us. Each one started in a similar way:

“Jessica was the warmest person I know. . .just so caring. The world will not be the same without her.”

“I was at the worst point in my life when I met Jessica. I have nothing but thanks for her, she helped me to see things for what they really were.”

“I met Jessica at the lowest point in my life. It’s because of her that I am OK now and have my daughter with me.”

“I met Jessica when I was in some of the roughest times of my life. Jess took me in and looked out for me whenever I needed help. Jessica was never judgmental and she would do anything for any of her friends, family, or anyone close to her.”

“Jessica was always witty and brought a smile to everyone’s face. She celebrated life to the fullest even at a young age.”

After hearing the inspiring stories of Jessica’s continual generosity, we felt the best way to honor her memory would be to “open her closet” to all in need and follow her example of giving and caring. We are excited to have found a partner in the Maslow Project as their mission of eliminating the barriers that can make it difficult to access help, is a perfect fit with Jessica’s spirit of giving. To receive help from Jessica, there were no forms or criteria to meet, if she saw someone with a need she tried to help no matter where or when.

Jessica was born May 8, 1984. She was the fifth the child of Richard and Sharilyn Cano. She was lovingly called “Baby Girl” by her Mama and Daddy and “Sma” by her siblings. She had a passion for life and enjoyed music and movies. She was a talented and gifted artist and writer. She was generous and non-judgmental. She called everyone her friend and her smile could light up a room.

Jessica was a preschool teacher at the Ashland YMCA and taught the two year olds in the Sunshine Room. Her kids adored her and their parents trusted her with the care of their children. Children were always drawn to her giving spirit and she could calm the tears of a frightened child with her smile and tenderness.

She is survived by her large family and by the legacy that she will share through Jessica’s Closet. Jessica’s Closet will provide clothing, shoes, and personal care products to youth ages birth to 22 years. We accept new and gently-used clothing in all sizes and personal care products including: diapers, shampoo, deodorant, skin-care, make-up, razors, etc.
